Morning Paperound, Matley, Orton Brimbles, May 1989 - September 1990

Did the Brimbles, Wistow area. Had to stop due to wanted to devote more time to my GCSE's

Evening Paperound, Shrewsbury Avenue, September 1992 - Summer 1993

Did the Orton Malbourne area and the Shrewsbury Avenue area while I was studying my A-levels

The Nest, Rivergate, Peterborough - Summer 1994

Various duties, mainly cooking and cleaning. Voluntary work, although there was plenty of food to eat and I was given a token amount of money. The business was just starting up and did not last long. It was someone in the church who started it and there were a lot of people I knew who came into the kitchens to chat which was good. Business folded due to high rents for coffee shops in town centre.

Proof reading Maths and Foundation Engineering textbook, Leicester - May 1995

This is the best job I have had. I found lots of errors in the textbooks before they went to print. I did this job whilst doing my HND in Maths at DeMontfort University. I knew my work would result in students having correct workings out for when they started their maths and engineering degrees. My maths skills took a great leap forward during this time. I met with the authors (who both had doctorates) every week and they taught me how to do new maths problems as I was talking to them - better than any lecture!

Effluent plan operative - Christian Salvesen Food Services, Bourne, Lincs. - Summer 1995,1996 & 1997 (approx. eighteen weeks in all)

I rang round every factory I could think of to see if there were any summer jobs. I kept trying and eventually I got this job. It was a privilege to work in the food industry and something I daydreamed about as a kid. It was a huge plant and I was left on my own for long periods of time. They had an excellent diesel Maestro van. I enjoyed helping to fix machines when they went wrong and switching pipes down to increase pressure on other pipes to release blockages. Working on ways to save the company money by using chemicals to bond the sludge so that less of it was treated. It was long hours, it took me 1 hour 20 minutes to get there and back and it was a 12 hour shift.

Factory Operative - Christian Salvesen Food Services, Bourne, Lincs. - Summer 1995 (six weeks)

Various duties around the factory, made pallettes up, topped and tailed peas. First day I cycled 21 miles to get there, left at 4:00h in the morning. Started at 7:00h and worked for 12 hours. My Metro's suspension was fixed and my Dad picked me up in it at the end of the shift. Probably the toughest day of my life. Wished I had worked there in the summer of 1996 after the pea season finished at the effluent plant so that my Student Debt would have been less.

Project into Under occupation of Council Houses - Leicester City Council Housing Research Dept., Leicester Feb - May 1996

It is an experience working for a loony left council. I was researching under occupation in LCC's housing stock, the research if used correctly could help a lot of people on the council waiting list get off and into council houses. The project involved collating the census data and putting it in a form that someone could understand. This was all part of my degree. They sort of offered me a job there, I did not take it up which I do regret.

District Office Administration - Pearl Assurance, Lynch Wood, P'boro. - December 1997 - January 1999

I was unemployed for 12 weeks after finishing at the effluent plant, worked for 1 month in Pensions Review. Australian Mutual Provident (parent company) demutualises. Met lots of new people. Got on with virtually everyone. Helped to train new starters.

NPI New Business, Tunbridge Wells, Kent - June 2000 - August 2000

Was seconded to Tunbridge Wells for 2 months to learn the system and help to bring it all back to Peterborough. It was great because we were in really plush hotels. You would get up have breakfast, go to work for 7 hours. Lunchtime walk round Tunbridge Wells City Centre. After work I would go for a swim, sit in the jackuzzi until dinnertime at 19:00h. Then go for a walk after dinner. It was great. Other days we would drive to the coast and find a restuarant and go and get a meal. To top it all the reports back to Peterborough was that I was working really hard and they were very pleased.

NPI New Business at Pearl Centre - August 2000 - August 2001
